Together we can create beauty

Yesterday, at the Cultsha Xpo, we asked everyone coming by our booth to decorate a 4″ x 4″ foam board tile that we then put up on a large piece of painted particle board. Some of the tiles had a bit of printing on them, and by the end of the day a wonderful work of art had appeared. When, at the end of a long day, I looked at the finished product, I suddenly realized something: together, we can create beauty. And not just that – we need each other to create this kind of beauty. If we had just sat down with two or three artists and decorated all the tiles, I am sure the end result would have been beautiful, as well – but not this kind of beauty. The beauty that comes from our different perspectives. The beauty of an intricate, colorful pattern created by a gifted painter next to the ecstatic scribble-study-in-orange-and-purple by an adorable two year-old girl (whose favorite colors are, you guessed it, orange and purple). The beauty of three tiles created by three siblings, hunched over the small Ikea-tables we brought to our booth in intense concentration. The beauty of the humorous tiles of everyone who started seeing the background pattern of the RVA skyline and used it in their tile design.

We (the Arts in the Alley team) came up with the concept for the mural – but we were just as surprised and delighted as everyone else with the end result – because in the end, we did not create this. About 288 RVA residents ranging from the very young to the not-so-young did. And it made me realize again that, yes, together we – as a city, as a community – can create beauty. In this city, in this world, in our lives, and in the lives of others.

So go create.
